How Sustainable Ad Revenue Let an Engineer Go All-In on California's 2A Community

CAguns.net launched in March 2024 with two members and no revenue model. Two and a half years later it has 50,000 members, 15,000 of them active every month, and it supports its founder full time.

Nobody would sell ads against California gun owners. Armanet went and found the buyers.

Armanet works hard at it. As the quality of our traffic and our users grew, they kept finding ways to monetize it better. They got us going when nobody else would, and they stayed with it long enough that I could focus on the site full time.

The Backstory

From two members to fifty thousand

On March 24, 2024, CAguns.net had two registered members. Today it has fifty thousand, more than 15,000 of whom are active in a given month and over 4,500 in a given week.

The site didn't begin as a business. Its founder, an infrastructure engineer who had recently been laid off, built it because California gun owners on Reddit were describing what they wanted, which was somewhere faster and more reliable for Californians. The complaint was specific and technical: page loads, timeouts, search that didn't return anything useful. It happened to describe exactly the problem he'd spent a career solving.

So he built it, alongside the people who had asked for it.

The bet was narrow. Not a new theory of what a California firearms community should be, a faster implementation of something people already valued. Page load, uptime, moderation consistent enough to be predictable, modern features, and infrastructure that could absorb a traffic spike without falling over. He self-hosted the entire stack rather than renting it.

That decision looks conservative until you understand the category.

The Category Nobody Will Sell

A vertical most networks decline by policy

Firearms is among the most systematically demonetized verticals on the internet. Most ad networks decline it as policy, without evaluation. Payment processors close accounts with little explanation and no appeal. Two payment processors closed his account. Platforms hosting firearms communities have a way of discovering that the terms of service have changed.

The practical consequence is that communities in this space run on the owner's money and donors on the site, or they don't run at all. CAguns ran on its founder's money, servers, moderation tooling, storage, bandwidth, while the member count climbed and the revenue didn't.

"

We had limited advertisers and a lot of quality viewers and members and Armanet helped us find advertisers to reach our captive audience. California is a huge valuable market that's underserved.

Two Businesses, Growing Together

Demand had to be built, not flipped on

CAguns joined Armanet in May 2024, about two months after launch. It was slow at first, and honest about being slow, there was no switch to flip. What followed was closer to two companies growing alongside each other than a vendor relationship.

The work was on the demand side, and it wasn't automated. Serving ads to a firearms audience is a technical problem that was solved long ago. Finding advertisers who specifically wanted to reach California gun owners was a sales problem nobody had bothered to work. Those buyers existed. This is an audience that spends real money on equipment, training, optics, ammunition, safes, insurance, and legal services, concentrated in the largest consumer market in the country. It was unsold, not unsellable.

As CAguns' traffic quality and membership improved, Armanet kept working the other side of the market to match it. Impressions grew 14× as the community grew. Yield per thousand impressions climbed 292% as advertisers competed for inventory that had previously had one bidder or none.

Why revenue outpaced traffic. Traffic growth alone would have moved revenue about 14×. Because the yield curve rose at the same time, the two multiplied rather than added, and revenue ended up more than 50× higher than at onboarding.

What the Revenue Bought

Not an exit. Attention.

CAguns had been running on nights and weekends. Once the revenue was durable rather than incidental, the side project became the work. The site now carries more than 13,000 discussion threads and 134,000 posts, roughly ten replies per thread, which is conversation rather than drive-by questions and answers. Alongside the forum sit a classifieds marketplace, a vendor directory, FFL and range reviews, and a knowledge base covering California's compliance requirements.

That last part is why the audience is sticky, and why it's hard. California firearms law changes materially every legislative session, and the questions members bring, how to transfer, how to travel, what's been added to a roster, what a pending bill would actually require, have consequences if answered wrong. A community that gets those answers right is a utility rather than a hangout. Fifty thousand people treat it that way.

The Next One

Owned community beats rented reach, particularly for technical, enthusiast audiences that mainstream platforms underserve and general-purpose ad networks decline to price.

Armanet monetizes the audiences other networks won't touch, for advertisers, publishers, and creators.
